cURL is typically a utility, in installs we have seen, to support other tools. In Zen Cart™ and osCommerce™, many contributions use cURL when SSL access is needed from PHP to web sites. Newer versions of PHP make this unnecessary, but, most contributions still use cURL.
cURL can also be used when accessing SSL based web sites from languages such as PHP or shell scripts to download data of some sort. For example, a cURL script may log on to a website, and download a file by “clicking” on it.
We can help you with any cURL related installation, and debugging as it relates to use in software modules or contributions. Many people, especially on shared hosts, have issues with cURL which stop them from using various modules. On some hosting providers, cURL is disabled on purpose. We can often help.
