Courier Imap refers to the standalone version of the Courier mail server product. Courier Imap can be used not only with the Courier server, but with Qmail, Exim, Postfix, and more. Courier Imap also integrates with other software, such as vpopmail for virtual domains, squirrelmail, sqwebmail, maildrop, and more. Courier Imap can also serve pop3. It users Maildir to read and store messages. Unlike Dovecot, Courier Imap also supports shared mail folders.
Courier Imap does support SSL and TLS as well. Courier does split out the authentication portion of the software into a separate module making it slightly more complex. Mail clients known to work well include Apple™ Mail, SquirrelMail, SqWebMail, Pine, Netscape, Outlook, and more. We have not encountered a mail client that does not work with Courier Imap.
