Qmail Setup, Configuration, Consulting

qmail consulting, setup, help
We can help you configure, manage, upgrade, or run your Qmail email server (actually, it’s a mail transfer agent). We have experience with Qmail Consulting on many Unix like platforms such as freeBSD™ and Linux. We have run large domains, and small with this great SMTP server. Qmail is public domain software, and free. Qmail is fully functional, and incredibly powerful, there are a lot of very advanced functions you can do with Qmail. We offer top quality Qmail consulting.

Qmail can be used with many different clients and software in many different ways. It can do POP3, Imap, Mailing Lists, TLS, SSL, control spam in very effective ways, authentication, statistics, virtual domains, web mail, automatic distribution based on content, and much more. It has legendary security, unlike a certain large companies products and their proprietary, non-standard system. Qmail does not typically require any sort of dedicated server, unless you are very large. Most of our clients run Qmail very easily on the same machine as their web server, or any number of other products. Receiving thousands of emails per day uses trivial CPU, it is very efficient. We ourselves use qmail, on Mac OSX. Out of thousands of spam messages that are sent to our various email addresses per day, maybe we get 2 a week that get through. Our last false positive was over a year ago.

We have done some innovative Qmail consulting. A good example is a vendor for a client who emailed orders from a certain accounting package. The email came in as a PDF with the order information in it. We used Qmail, and a few other products, to recognize the email coming in, parsed the PDF, and, uploaded the order into their accounting system. This eliminated re-keying and errors. This is just an example of the power of Qmail and the type of consulting we can do.

Typically, if you want to run your own email server, you will need a dedicated IP address. It is possible to use dynamic DNS, but, not always a good idea as many block lists block dynamic IP email servers. An alternative if you cannot or will not get a static IP address is to use an inexpensive email hosting service who can use your domain name to receive emails, and, download them into your own email server via a product such as fetchmail. This allows you to keep all of your emails locally for performance reasons (if you like Imap for example), and do a much better job of spam filtering. Obviously, you can also choose to simply use an inexpensive email hosting service if you wish and forgo running your own email server. Typically though, we’ve seen far better spam control running your own server, properly done. The potential automation you can do with qmail should also be a consideration.

Our qmail standard full installation includes:
  • Qmail with Spamcontrol
  • daemontools for startup and monitoring of qmail
  • ucspi-tcp for connection management with qmail
  • ClamAV for virus and phishing management
  • DSpam for spam recognition and learning
