We wrote the Fedex™ shipping contribution for osCommerce™, which was then ported to Zen Cart™. As such, we are intimately familiar with the contribution. As simple as shipping seems, there are always people wanting it to do something different or more.
The module had a design goal of not requiring any database changes, or, changes to any existing code. So, there were some things the module simply could not do with that goal in mind.
