Dovecot is a very secure and fast IMAP and pop3 server. We use Dovecot ourselves. We found it faster than Courier. Dovecot supports mbox and maildir style mailboxes. It works with email systems such as Qmail, Exim, Postfix, and more. It also supports plugins. Dovecot has numerous configurable options, and is extremely flexible.
Mail clients known to work well include Apple™ Mail, Outlook, Netscape, Evolution, Mulberry, Thunderbird, Mutt, Pine, SquirrelMail, Horde IMP, RoundCube WebMail, @Mail WebMail, and more. We have not encountered a mail client that does not work.
Dovecot supports numerous authentication methods, and can use SSL and or TLS. It integrates with other products such as vpopmail and supports PAM, CheckPassword, and more. It can even authenticate via SQL statements against any SQL type database. It is difficult to imagine a more flexible system. That being said, one current limitation is the lack of shared mailboxes, this is being worked on.
