maildrop is a mail delivery agent (MDA) software package, similar to procmail but faster. It is used in a variety of mail systems and packages such as Qmail, Courier, Postfix, and more. It works with maildir and mbox type mailboxes. maildrop uses a functional language to write the filtering or routing logic.
With maildrop, you can take mail coming in, and, apply logic to it. To use one customer as an example, when emails come from a certain email address, with a certain subject, and, a certain mail header, with a certain attachment, we intercept that email, run some external script, and, deliver it. In this case, the script took the attachment PDF file, and, created a sales order from it, and, stuffed it into the ERP system. Just an example of what you can do with maildrop. It is also often used with Spam filtering software, so, it can run the mail through the Spam software, and, if a bad result comes back, perhaps send the mail not to the inbox of the intended recipient, but, to a spam folder.
