DSPAM is a very fast, efficient, and most importantly effective open source spam filter. We have generally seen rates of 1 error out of a thousand emails or more. Our personal use shows maybe one email per week that is spam, that gets through. We have not seen a false positive in more than a year! If your rates are not this good, consider DSPAM! There is no reason to live with an inbox full of spam. It’s a total waste of time!
DSPAM works like some other spam filters, typically, you train to learn what spam is. After a while, it is recognized. Recognition times are typically a hundredth of a second or so. While other spam filters may be as effective, they are not that fast! It is written in C, so it is not interpreted. In many email systems, spam is filtered before it gets to a user inbox, and, training is a simple as dragging to another folder.
Emails systems that work with DSPAM include qmail, exim, postfix, sendmail, courier, and more. Most systems we see use a SQL database as a backend to store the data. It is able to be implemented in a variety of ways, via procmail or maildrop, as a pop3 proxy, as a SMTP relay, and more. It has a web UI for those wanting to use it. You can maintain global spam data, by group, or individual. Source mail servers can be identified if you wish and tracked for firewall, blacklists, etc.
